One of the best places to base yourselves in Phuket is Kata.  Kata is extremely family friendly and offers a good mix between bustling Patong and sleepy Karon. Its spectacular beach, great restaurants, boutique shopping, fun activities and varied accommodation make for a great family holiday.

There is a variety of accommodation in Kata to suit every traveller’s budget.  We chose to stay in CENTARA KATA RESORT for the following reasons:

Rooms:  Various options to suit all families including family rooms or 1 and 2 bedroom suites (can sleep 6). We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite with an additional bed in the lounge room.  With 2 bathrooms, there was plenty of room for the whole family.

Leisure Facilities:  3 pools, jacuzzi, aqua beds, swim-up pool bar, waterslide, games rooms, fitness room, spa, Kid’s Club. The kids loved the waterslide and spent hours in the pool. There were also plenty of sunbeds available at all times of the day.  My husband and I enjoyed the swim up bar and the cocktails were amazing especially the Pina Coladas.

Dining:  Restaurant and 2 pool bars. Buffet breakfast offers an array of hot and cold choices, both Western and Thai.  Large selection of fresh fruit and juices available. The omelets and pancakes are made on request and are a hit with most families.

Location: 10 minute walk to beach, shopping, restaurants, spas and thai massages. The walk to the beach is easy and enables you to check out shops and restaurants along the away.

Quiet, laid back and clean beach with white sand and clear water.  Plenty of  sunbeds to hire. Water activities including jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, surfing.  Kata Beach is perfect for relaxing with your children.  It is a nice cross between lively Patong and quiet Karon.

There are a wide array of restaurants and cafes in Kata offering traditional Thai and cuisine from around the world.  Our two favourite restaurants were:

The Kitchen Kata Beach 100/1 Koktanod Road, Kata Beach

The restaurant provides free local transport to and from your hotel in a large tuk-tuk.  The food is fresh, healthy and delicious.  The bar in the middle of the restaurant makes great cocktails and is a fabulous place to wait for a table. A pool table at the back of the restaurant provides a nice distraction for the kids.  The food is reasonably priced and the portions are big which is an added bonus with a large family.

Eight-Fold Restaurant 99 Katekwan Rd, Kata Beach, Opposite Centara Kata Resort.

Fresh, tasty food that is very reasonably priced.  Children are made to feel welcome.  Menu includes both Thai and some Western choices.  Loved the Tom Yum Soup – spicy, just how I like it.  The kids had pasta and burgers/chips and loved it.

Surf House (Simulated surfing): Next to the beach

The kids did the simulated surfing and loved it despite it being very challenging.  It looks easier than it is.  There is a bar and restaurant attached so you can enjoy a beer/cocktail and some food whilst watching the kids.  Some of the very young kids went with a parent.  Definitely worth the money.

Elephant Trekking: Kok Chang Safari Elephant Trekking, 287 Moo 2 Sai Yuan Road, Kata Beach

Reasonably priced and a very enjoyeable experience through the jungle.  Highly recommended.

Spas and Thai Massages:  Every second shop in Kata is offers a spa and thai massage. Can be a fun family acitivity. The girls and I had a pedicure and the boys had a foot massage. I also indulged in several massages which were heavenly.

Hair Braiding:  There are plenty of shoprs in Kata for hair-braiding. Just make sure to allocate a couple of hours as it is time-consuming if you have long hair.

Shopping: Lots of shops to choose from but if want more variety, head to Patong. My girls and I bought some bikinis and the boys bought some shorts.

Other Activities: There are plenty more activities to do in Kata such as cooking classes, Thai boxing and there is no shortage of tourist desks to help you plan anything you want.
